Taxonomic Notes: Recently recorded from the Rovuma River system in Mozambique. The taxonomic status of these specimens is uncertain. Described from the Sabi River, South Africa. Populations may extend up into the Kafue, upper Zambezi and Cunene rivers. The taxonomic status of these upper Zambezi populations needs to be determined.

Justification:
Widespread in the rivers of the Mozambique floodplain extending slightly into South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Abundant in suitable habitats. Nowhere is this species seriously threatened.

Range Description: Known from low-veld reaches of the larger east-coast rivers, from the Zambezi south to the Phongolo. Unverified records are known from several upper Zambezi regions e.g., lower Kafue.

Habitat and Ecology: Usually collected in still, vegetated waters associated with main river channels of large rivers. Marginal pools and lagoons which may be isolated from the main channel.
