Range Description: Cunene, Okavango, Upper Zambezi and Kafue Rivers, and Lake Kariba (Skelton 2001).

Population [top]

Population: Widespread and apparently the commonest Sargochromis in the Upper Zambezi system (Tweddle et al. 2004), but scarce in the Okavango Delta (Tweddle et al. 2003) and in Lake Kariba.
Population Trend: Unknown

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Prefers deep main river channels and floodplain lagoons with sandy bottoms (Skelton 2001). Small individuals may be found in floodplain habitats (Winemiller 1991). Larger specimens inhabit deep pools in the main river channel (Tweddle et al. 2004). Feeds primarily on snails, bivalves and insect larva (Winemiller 1991, Skelton 2001).
