Justification: Widespread and reasonably common in low-veld reaches of large rivers on the south-east African coastal plain. Although heavily fished in certain areas this is not considered a threat to this species' survival. Protected throughout the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Dams and weirs probably affect seasonal upstream migrations but this does not affect lower reaches of large rivers where it is fairly common. |
|
| Range Description: | Widespread and fairly common in the middle and lower Zambezi south to the Phongolo River in South Africa. |
| Countries: |
Native:
Malawi; Mozambique; South Africa (Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo Province, Mpumalanga); Swaziland; Zambia; Zimbabwe
|
| Population: | Not particularly common although widespread. |
| Population Trend: |
Unknown
|
| Habitat and Ecology: | Low-veld reaches of larger rivers. Occurs in a variety of habitats from rocky substrates through to vegetated muddy substrates. In the lower Zambezi usually not as abundant as L. altivelis. |
| Systems: | Freshwater |
| Major Threat(s): | Heavily fished in certain areas. Dams and weirs affect river flows, sediment fluxes and seasonal migrations. |
| Conservation Actions: | Fisheries management needs to be implemented in certain riverine fisheres in Mozambique. Fishways should be designed into weirs and dams. |
