Taxonomy [top]

Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family
ANIMALIA CHORDATA ACTINOPTERYGII CYPRINIFORMES CYPRINIDAE

Scientific Name: Barbus annectens
Species Authority: Gilchrist & Thompson, 1917
Common Name/s:
English Broadstriped Barb
Taxonomic Notes: Possibly a species complex. Numerous populations of spotted barbs occur down the east African coast. The specific status of many of these populations needs further examination.

Inland specimens similar to B. annectens enter the middle Zambezi (Zambia and Zimbabwe) and into the lower Shire (Malawi). According to D. Tweddle these are not B. annectens but an undescribed spotted barb species. The taxonomy of these populations needs to be determined also.
