Endemic to Lake Malawi. Probably widely distributed along the rocky lake shore

Range Description: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Occurs in the southern part of the lake. Observed at Mbenje island, Nkhomo reef, Eccles reef and around the Malere islands.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: This species prefers sandy parts of intermediate habitats. Occurs at depth below 10 m. Females and non-breeding males gather in small foraging groups while feeding on plankton. Males have been seen feeding on detritus on the bottom. Breeding occurs throughout the year and slows during the rainy season. Males build caves in the intermediate habitat at levels deeper than 17 m. Very popular among aquarists. Aquarium trade name – Haplochromis crysonotus.
