A widely distributed species affected by local declines. The wider population is, however, not impacted by any known widespread major threats.

Range Description: Tanzania: distributed in Mtera dam, Kidatu dam, Rivers Pangani, Ruvuma and Rufiji. Malawi: Reported to occur in Lake Chiuta.

Habitat and Ecology: Distributed in deep waters of large rivers and lakes. A predator, sometimes feeding on shrimp.

Major Threat(s): Mass kills due to asphyxiation. A serious event was observed in Tanzania in 1984. Illegal fishing practice, especially by use of under meshed nets and other illegal techniques. Weed infestation and high turbidity.
