Justification:
Restricted to only four known locations in southeastern Lake Victoria at depths up to 5 m. With an extent of occurrence <5,000 km² and continued decline due to predation and loss of water quality, the species qualifies as Endangered.

Range Description: Originally, widely distributed in clear waters of southeastern Lake Victoria. Mrosso et al. (in press) have since reported its presence in only four locations.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Restricted to rocky substrates on gentle to moderately steep slopes up to 4m deep. Feeds on Chironomid larvae, filamentous Chlorophyta, diatoms and macrophyte materials. It is a mouth brooder with parental care.

Major Threat(s): Illegal fishing; turbidity/pollution; and predation, especially by Nile perch.
