| Taxonomic Notes: | The genus Barbus (Cyprinidae) is restricted to a small number of species mainly inhabiting the European ichthyographic region including Northeast Africa. Most of the African species that are currently included in the genus, taxonomically do not appear to be closely related to the genus Barbus sensu strictu. However, no attempts have yet been made at an adequate nomenclature of the African forms. We therefore follow Berrebi et al. (1996) and use in this paper the term ‘Barbus’ for the cyprinid fish species which were previously considered as Barbus (Seegers et al., unpublished). | |||

Justification: Endemic to Malawi. Found in only three locations: three tributaries of the Lower Shire River (Mwabvi River, Ruo River and Nswadzi River). |
|
| Range Description: | Endemic to the tributaries of the Lower Shire River, Lower Zambezi system, Malawi (Skelton 1993). Mwabvi River, Ruo River (Tweddle and Willoughby 1979) and Nswadzi river (eastern side of Thyolo escarpment). It is quite common in the Ruo River above the Zoa falls, but has not been found below the falls, which constitute a major environmental and ecological barrier between the Upper Ruo and the Shire system (Tweddle and Willoughby 1979). |

Native:
Malawi
|
| Population: | No information available. |
| Population Trend: |
Unknown
|
| Habitat and Ecology: | Prefers running water and rocky habitats (Skelton 1993). |
| Systems: | Freshwater |
| Major Threat(s): | The species may be exposed to Over-fishing, and may be susceptible to fish poisoning in rivers, and deterioration of riverine habitat due to siltation from soil erosion (bad land practise as well as deforestation along rivers). |
| Conservation Actions: | In the Mwabvi river, the pool where this species occurs is well within the boundaries of Mwabvi game reserve. |
