Geographic Range [top]

Range Description: Restricted to southern Switzerland, northern Italy, southern Slovenia and River Zrmanja in Croatia. It has been introduced to the Tiber and Mignone rivers and a number of other small rivers in central and southern Italy.

Population: Generally stable but locally decreasing. It is considered a major pest species outside its natural range.

Habitat and Ecology [top]

Habitat and Ecology: Lives in small rivers in the hill zone where there is fast running water and a stony substrate. Also found in large lakes south of the Alps. Where it has been introduced outside its natural range it is considered to be the principle threat to Padogobius nigricans.

Major Threat(s): Water extraction and pollution.

Conservation Actions: It is listed in the Appendix III of the Bern Convention where it is misidentified as Gobius fluviatilis (Not valid) and Padogobius (inferior synonym) martensi.
